Biosketch
Shinya Sakaguchi completed his master thesis in 2002 under the supervision of Prof. Tadatsugu Taniguchi (University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan), an internationally recognized authority in the field of innate immunology. In 2004 he joined Prof. Ellmeier’s laboratory (Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria) as a PhD student and elucidated molecular mechanisms controlling T cell development, particularly CD4/CD8 cell lineage decision. After finishing his PhD study with distinction in 2009, he continued to work in Prof. Ellmeier’s laboratory as Postdoctoral Fellow. Due to his scientific as well as teaching achievements, he was appointed to Assistant Professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2016 and three years later promoted to Associated Professor. In addition, in 2021 he has received the degree of Habilitation in the field of immunology from the Medical University of Vienna. Since 2016 he established his own research group focusing on transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of cytotoxic T cell differentiation. He received the Karl Landsteiner-Prize awarded by the Austrian Society of Allergology and Immunology (ÖGAI) and the Sanofi-aventis Prize awarded by Sanofi-aventis. Moreover, his PhD student recently received L’Oreal fellowship for female PhD Student – women in Science – Austria as well as Best Dissertation Prize awarded by ÖGAI.
