Water Hygiene

Mission Statement

Water Hygiene: An interdisciplinary field of expertise, which aims to tackle scientific questions with a wholistic approach and in high quality.

Our Strategy

The Water Hygiene work group is focussed on the quality of drinking water and water resources, water in public health institutions and for medical applications as well as bath water and surfce water in regard to human health.

We can only be successful in preventing water-associated diseases if we look into the systems of water resources wholistically, i.e. down to the end consumer.

Our findings are then made into scientific publications, but into national and international standards, guidelines and norms as well. That way, we address our social responsibility in a scietific and public health-related way.

Our Focus

  • We offer our abilities as an accredited test and inspecting body API Hygiene Vienna using our chemical, microbiological and tecnological expertise by creating water-hygienic certificates and providing professional support for healthcare facilities, water suppliers, authorities and companies. Our goal is to transfer our knowledge to laymen too and do so by organizing university courses, lectures and trainings, providing advise and establishing norms and guidelines.
  • For water disinfection, we use UV-radiation devices in pilot- and full-scale at the Wasser-Technikum Wiental (www.uv-team-austria.at).
  • In tthe aforementioned area of expertise, we specialize in water-transmissble pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa as well as indicator microorganisms. A lab device for radiation treatment, one for photo-reactivation as well as a flow system guarantee adjustable conditions for measuring and control.
  • Another important task is teaching medical students (via seminars, supporting them with their diplomas, PhD programs) and student of natural sciences as well as those in training as experts in water hygiene (§ 73 LMSVG).
  • As a partner of the international research cooperation "Water and Health", we collaborate with TU Vienna and Karl Landsteiner Privatuniversität Krems to achieve collective goals.
