Mission Statement
In Europe, about 3,5 million people acquire nosokomial infections during their stay at a hospital or care facility each year.
Every third of these Hospital Acquired Infection or Healthcare Acquired Infection (HAI) dubbed infections could be prevented through adequate measures. Because 80% of infections in total are transmitted by the hands, Hand Hygiene is the most important countermeasure against infections.
Therefore, the "Medical-technical Hygiene" foucuses on prevention of infections through disinfection in general as well as Hand Hygiene in particular and employs various strategies to disrupt the chains of infection.
Our main emphasis lies on evaluating the effectivity of disinfection agents and procedures, the developement of of novel and more effective disinfectants, but also improved and more practice-orientated testing methods for proving the a disinfectants effectivity.
Additionally, we monitor the implementation of the legislator's requirements in healthcare facilities (i.e. hospital laudry services, cafeterias and ventilation loops) by hygienic surveillance and assessment of cleaning and disinfection devices as well as other factors to contribute to preventing infections.
Our practice-gained insights are used in research and higher education in the course of the training of medical doctors and dentists alike, as well as other fields of natural sciences. By connecting research, teaching and expertise in the field of infection prevention and public health, a transfer of academic knowledge as cooperations of public/private institutions, we contribute to tackling social challenges like the pandemic.
